EZULWINI—The Hhohho Regional Entrepreneur of the Year Awards (EYA) Competition spotlighted companies with unique services and products in the technology, creativity, and locally manufactured products spaces.
The regionals were held at the Sibane Sami Hotel last Friday, where eight entrepreneurs were awarded for excellence in various categories.
Datamatics, owned by Sibusiso Baartjies, won the Hhohho Entrepreneur Award and the Best Techno Savvy Company Award.
Established in 2012, his business is situated in the Mbabane Sokhamlilo Building and specializes in providing IT services, specifically Geographic Information Systems and Management Information Systems. It employs seven full-time employees and others part-time for data collection.
“Since we started, our business has been improving because technology is the way to go. We are able to grow thanks to teamwork and collaboration. Infusing technology in business operations is important, including making processes and systems better,” he says.
The event was graced by the Minister of Commerce Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo, sponsors and partners FNB Eswatini (title sponsor), the Small Enterprises Development Company (SEDCO), Eswatini National Provident Fund (ENPF), Taiwan ICDF, Fincorp and Old Mutual.
SEDCO CEO Mhlanga thanked the entrepreneurs for their participation. “We received 56 applications from the Hhohho Region. This increased interest proves that the region’s entrepreneurs take their services and products seriously,” she said.
Minister Khumalo encouraged the entrepreneurs to continue with their spirit of excellence.
“We thank the entrants for participating and all the sponsors and partners for supporting Eswatini’s businesses. We shall also continue to do our part to support the ease of doing business for all,” he said.
The regional competitions build up to the national competition, where the regional winners will compete.
FNB’s E600 000 CAR PRIZE EXCITES ENTRANTS
There is a euphoria over the grand prize for the EYA national competition winner.
In various interviews, some of the entrants in Shiselweni and Hhohho said their motivation was the main prize because of the value a utility vehicle brings to a business.
The latest Regional winner, Sibusiso Baartjies, said he joined the competition again this year because the car would be a useful asset to his company. His business delivers services all over the country, including to schools outside the town centres.
FNB CEO Dennis Mbingo disclosed the details of this year’s grand prize, stating that it was a Toyota GD6 worth E600 000 after fittings.
“A vehicle is important for the operations of a business. We congratulate everyone who participated because just being a part of EYA makes your business taken in a serious light,” he said.
The main prizes for EYA are from FNB Foundation and FNB.

“I co-own the business with Kim-Nxumalo Henwood, and we started the business a year ago. In the past, we used to only stock products, but we have evolved to now manufacture them thanks to the expert training we got. The business was created to answer the problems we also faced concerning hair care products for African women. We are pleased it is stocked in various places, including Pick n Pay Stores. We have two employees. Our vision is to be among the well-known brands in the beauty products space. We believe EYA is a great conduit for us to gain visibility and growth.”

Dekoena Investments (Koena Distributors)
Specialists in Interior Fittings, Flooring and Upholstery
“We began work in 2022, and I had previous experience as an employee in a similar business that had closed down. We currently have four employees. I joined EYA to validate my aspirations and be tested by experienced judges. These awards give us exposure to the whole country and new business leads. What has helped us grow is continuous learning. In one SEDCO training in 2014, we were taught financial management, which is central to business growth. Our vision is to be a business that is a one-stop shop that offers all interior products and services.”

Business Name: Msandi’s Fruits and Veg
EYA Category: Regional Outstanding Green Business
Speciality: Fruits and Vegetables
“I was inspired to do business by a friend in SA with fruit trees. Upon returning home, I planted banana trees and strategically incorporated vegetables between them, maximizing land usage. In 2017, I formalized my efforts by registering the business.
While I don’t have full-time employees, I teach others about proper planting and vegetation care. The winnings will allow me to construct a permanent structure on the land generously provided by the Umphakatsi. This will significantly contribute to the growth and sustainability of my business. My faith plays a vital role in my work. A verse from Deuteronomy 2:7 speaks of God blessing you in all the work of your hands. This is a constant source of inspiration.”

“Growing up without parents, I faced challenges many wouldn’t understand. But even in those dark times, there was a flicker of creativity. I started by making grass mats with my grandma and decorating them with colourful wrappers from sweet treats.
Currently, I have one employee and am looking forward to growing.
I dream of an active workshop filled with the rhythmic ringing of beads and the joy of creation. I have learnt that patience is paramount in business, and the world can be a tough marketplace. So keep creating, keep striving, and watch your dreams take flight, one bead at a time.”

Specialising in Construction, Building and Civil Works, Structural Designs and Partitioning
“Our company began in 2019 by supplying essential food supplies and having a restaurant. However, with Covid-19 restrictions in early 2020, we made a strategic turning point. Recognizing the changing landscape, we shifted our focus to the construction sector in Eswatini. This involved tendering for building projects, upgrades, and both road and building construction.
I have six permanent staff members and a total of 11 personnel. Participating in the EYA program helps to connect with EYA sponsors, attract new clients, and fuel the company’s growth. We strive for consistent expansion while prioritizing safe business practices that minimize risk.
